RACS visits RPD Chief Sheppard

Rochester Academy Charter School Science Olympiad students and Principal Demirtas visited Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard on his turf today. Police Chief Sheppard has come to visit RACS on several occasions. Today RACS students got to return the favor. Rochester Academy Charter School went to the downtown public safety building where Chief Sheppard’s office is located. Everyone sat together around a huge round table and discussed the RPD slogan “we are on the same team” and what it meant to students. Chief Sheppard and RACS students discussed the importance of how children and police can work together for a brighter future in Rochester. Students listened very intensely and were excited to be a part of such a special discussion from one of our city leaders. Students got to share the success they all experienced at our last Science Olympiad competition. Chief Sheppard stated he was very impressed with their hard work. Students then got to go on an incredible tour of the public safety building. They learned how officers earn medals and how officer ranking is identified. They met two Deputy Chiefs. Each Deputy Chief explained what they do to keep our city safe. RACS students also saw some special areas where serious math skills are used to help figure out scheduling for the nearly 900 members that make up the RPD. Students then met two unforgettable RPD officers. One officer that was injured in the line of duty and another who is a mounted officer. They both were amazing and spoke with such pride for Rochester. It was both inspirational and motivational for our students. The tour ended in a technology haven where the police can keep a bird’s eye view of the city. It was incredible to see the amazing detail the police can see from miles away. Students left knowing that the police do so much more besides catching criminals. They left knowing they have a caring helping hand in the RPD.
